Empowering mental health support through digital inclusion

In today’s digital world, being online is more than a convenience—it’s a lifeline. For many, access to technology can transform the way they manage their health, wellbeing and daily challenges. Recognising this, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority has launched a digital inclusion programme to support communities across the region to make sure everyone can get – and be confident – online.

One organisation benefiting from this initiative is Platform 1, a mental health charity in Huddersfield. With support from Kirklees Council’s digital inclusion team, Platform 1 successfully secured £4,800 in funding through the UKSPF Digital Capital Gains fund. The charity used the grant to purchase tablets that are now being loaned to service users who cannot visit the charity’s office due to mobility or mental health challenges.

These tablets are being used to deliver online counselling sessions, helping previously underserved individuals access vital support from the comfort of their homes. This has opened up new opportunities for engagement and is making a meaningful difference in the lives of Kirklees residents.

The help from Kirklees Council Digital Inclusion Team throughout the bidding process has been fantastic. This funding is already making a huge impact, and we’re excited to continue working together to expand our reach and services in the future.

In addition to funding, Kirklees Council is assisting Platform 1 in identifying a more suitable premises to further enhance the charity’s ability to serve the community.

This collaboration highlights the power of digital inclusion to break barriers, improve access to essential services, and create a more connected and supported society.
