Unique opportunity in West Yorkshire custody role
Members of the public are being given the unique opportunity to play their part in ensuring West Yorkshire remains safe, just, and inclusive.
Recruitment has opened for new Independent Custody Visitors (ICV) as part of a scheme which sees volunteers make unannounced visits to police custody suites to check on the dignity, rights and welfare of detainees.
Operated locally by the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, they are completely independent of the police service and play a vital role.
Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe OBE, who is also the joint lead for Transparency and Accountability, said:
“Independent custody visitors play a crucial role in checking that people in police cells are being looked after safely, with the right care and support.
“It is important that independent safeguards are in place for those who are detained, and that they can expect a consistently high standard.
“If you want to make a difference and become part of our incredible team please get in touch.”
On their visits ICVs observe, comment and report on the conditions of the custody suites and check that the detainees are being properly looked after.
They also ensure detainees understand their rights and entitlements.
Long-term volunteer, Val, said:
“Our role is important because we are members of the public just like them. We don’t wear a uniform, we don’t know why someone has been locked up and we don’t want to know. We are just interested in their welfare.
“It is nice to be able to speak to people and reassure them that somebody from the public, outside, nothing to do with the police have come in to see them.
“Being an ICV gives me an incredible sense of purpose, and a big part of it is helping people when they are at their most vulnerable.”
The scheme covers Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees and Calderdale.
The recruitment campaign runs until Sunday 28 September 2025. To find out more visit West Yorkshire Combined Authority
